Modal Verbs + Pregnancy FREE HANDOUT /Czasowniki modalne z ciążą w tle DARMOWY HANDOUT

Kiedy okazało się, że jestem w ciąży, zostałam przez rodzinę, znajomych i dalszych znajomych zbombardowana serią rad odnośnie tego co powinnam, a czego kategorycznie nie mogę robić w ciąży. Zainspirowało mnie to przeprowadzenia na ten temat zajęć. Nic nie mogło w tej sytuacji sprawdzić się lepiej niż czasowniki modalne! :-) 

When I found out that I was pregnant, my family, friends and aquaintances bombed me with advice regarding what I should and mustn't do while being pregnant. That inspired me to use this topic during my classes. Of course nothing could be better in this situation than modal verbs! :-)

Muszę w tym miejscu przyznać, że na początku ciąży dałam się zwariować - panicznie bałam się, że w wyniku mojej niewiedzy mogę popełnić jakiś błąd i niechcący w jakiś sposób skrzywdzić moją kochaną kruszynkę. Słuchałam zatem z zaangażowaniem wszelkich rad, czytałam przeróżne artykuły i chwytałam się "mądrych książek". Bardzo szybko zorientowałam się jednak, że zarówno rady, które otrzymywałam, jak i artykuły, które czytałam bardzo często różniły się w przekazie lub nawet wzajemnie wykluczały. 

At this point, I need to admit that at the beginning of my pregnancy I went crazy - I was unbelievably scared that because of my lack of knowledge I could make some mistake and unintentionally hurt my little precious. So I listened to the advice with engagement, I read various articles and "smart books". Nevertheless, I quickly realized that the pieces of advice which I received and the articles which I read gave me contradictory information.

Taki efekt "sprzeczności" chciałam również uzyskać na zajęciach. Chciałam poróżnić moich uczniów, rzucić kość niezgody i podsycać różnice zdań. Chciałam, żeby mogli podzielić się ze mną swoją wiedzą i doświadczeniem. Dałam im możliwość dyskutowania, sprzeczania się i uzasadnienia swoich racji. Warunek był taki, że przy formowaniu wyjściowej opinii musieli użyć czasowników modalnych. Nikomu nie przytakiwałam jednoznacznie i każdą opinię zapisywałam  na tablicy.

I wanted to achieve the same result of "contradiction"during my classes. I wanted to set my students by the ears, throw a bone of contention and foster differences of opinion. I wanted my students to share their knowledge and experience. I gave them opportunity to discuss, to disagree and justyfy their opinions, on condition that they formed their opinion using modal verbs. I didn't agree or disagree with anyone but I wrote each opinion on the board.

Lekcję przeprowadziłam w grupie uczennic z Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku, gdzie jestem lektorem od wielu lat. I tylko dlatego, że jestem z nimi w dosyć przyjacielskiej relacji pozwoliłam sobie potraktować ten temat i ten handout, jako pretekst do poinformowania moich emerytek o swoim odmiennym stanie. W innych bardziej "obcych" grupach raczej bym się na to nie odważyła :-) 

The lesson was conducted with a group of students from the University of the Third Age, where I have been a teacher for many years. The only reason I let myself use this subject and this handout as an opportunity to inform my dear "Pensioners"  about my pregnancy is that I am in a friendly relationship to them. I wouldn't dare to do that in other, more "distant" groups :-)

Student's diary as a great way of practising the Past Simple Tense/ Pamiętnik ucznia jako dobry sposób na trenowanie Past Simple

Pewna Pani od angielskiego była bardzo wścibska i strasznie ciekawiło ją życie jej uczniów. Nie wystarczał jej zwykły small talk. Znalazła więc sposób na zaspokojenie ciekawości...

Once there lived a nosy ESL teacher who was curious about her students' lives. A small talk was not enough so she found a way to feed her curiosity...

Wścibska Pani sprytnie sobie obmyśliła swoją tajną akcję pod kryptonimem "Pamiętnik":

1. Najpierw nauczyła swoich uczniów czasu Past Simple. Przez kilka lekcji uczniowie omawiali i trenowali różne aspekty tego zagadnienia. W międzyczasie ćwiczyli czasowniki regularne i nieregularne. Dla niepoznaki Wścibska Pani zadawała przeróżne zadania domowe.
2. Kiedy Wścibska Pani uznała, że jej uczniowie są już gotowi, poprosiła o przyniesienie na kolejną lekcję czystego zeszytu. Nie powiedziała jednak uczniom, w jakim celu. 
3. Uczniowie dali się złapać w sidła Wścibskiej Pani i zgodnie z poleceniem przynieśli zeszyty. Wścibska Pani poprosiła o zatytułowanie pierwszej strony: (Name and Surname)'s Diary. Od tej pory uczniowie co tydzień mieli zdawać relację ze swojego życia w języku angielskim. Wścibska Pani wytłumaczyła, że nie ma minimalnej ani maksymalnej liczny słów i że mogą napisać o najzwyklejszych drobnostkach lub o tym, co uważają za najciekawsze. 
4. Oczywiście, żeby zamydlić uczniom oczy, Wścibska Pani powiedziała, że wcale nie jest wścibska i że jeśli nie chcą pisać prawdy o sobie, to mogą pisać zmyślone historie. 
5. Od tej pory Wścibska Pani otrzymuje regularne porcje wiedzy na temat życia jej uczniów, siada sobie wygodnie z kawką i czyta.     

Mrs.Nosy skillfully planned her secret operation code-named "Diary":

1. First, she taught her students the Past Simple tense. During a few lessons the students learnt and practiced several aspects of this tense. In the meantime, they practiced regular and irregular verbs. To mislead her students, Mrs. Nosy gave them various homework tasks.
2. When Mrs.Nosy noticed that the students were ready, she asked them to bring new notebooks for the next class. She didn't tell them what they needed the notebooks for.
3. The students fell into a trap and they brought the notebooks. Mrs. Nosy asked her students to entitle the first page: (Name and Surname)'s Diary. From that moment, the students were to give a weekly account of their lives in English. 
4. In order to pool the wool over her students' eyes, Mrs. Nosy explained to them that she wasn't nosy at all and if they didn't want to describe real events, they could  make their stories up. 
5. Since that day, Mrs. Nosy has received regular portions of knowledge about her students' lives. She may sit comfortably, drink coffee and read.

Wścibska Pani jest również Panią Zabieganą, która w ciągu tygodnia ma wiele przeróżnych zajęć i zawsze ma coś do zrobienia. Ma też przynajmniej sto pomysłów na minutę i dużą część z nich urzeczywistnia. Dlatego też zdarza jej się czytać pamiętniki pod osłoną nocy, dzień przed kolejnym spotkaniem z uczniami...

Mrs. Nosy is also Mrs. Busy who has many various occupations and she always has something to do. She also has at least one hundred ideas a minute and she turns out a big part of them into action. That's why it happens that she reads the diaries at a night before the next meeting with her students...

Wścibska Pani bardzo lubi ludzi i jest straszną gadułą. Panoszy się w czyichś pamiętnikach, kreśli, bazgroli, komentuje, zaznacza ciekawe słowa, zadaje dodatkowe pytania.

Mrs. Nosy likes people very much and she is a real chatterbox. She lords it over the diaries, she crosses things out, scribbles, makes comments, marks interesting vocabulary, asks follow-up questions.

Wścibska Pani jest bardzo zadowolona, ponieważ uczniowie nie wyczuli zasadzki:

1. Od 4 tygodni chętnie piszą o sobie.
2. Poprawnie używają czasu Past Simple w bliskim sobie kontekście.
3. Pracują w domu ze słownikiem.
4. Dali wciągnąć się w dialog i odpowiadają na pytania pomocnicze. 
5. Ciekawość Wścibskiej Pani jest zaspokojona. ;-)

Mrs. Nosy is really glad because her students haven't sensed that they've been sprung in a trap:

1. They have written about themselves for 4 weeks.
2. They use the Past Simple tense correctly in a familiar context.
3. They work with dictionaries at home.
4. They have got engrossed in the dialogue and they answer the follow-up questions. 
5. Mrs. Nosy's curiosity is satisfied. ;-)

Wścibska Pani z chęcią dowie się, czy jej koledzy i koleżanki po fachu również stosują ten sposób?
Mrs. Nosy will eagerly find out if her fellow teachers also use this method in their teaching?

HOW I USE A CAT TO TEACH PRESENT CONTINUOUS/JAK WYTŁUMACZYĆ PRESENT CONTINUOUS PRZY UŻYCIU KOTA

Zawsze bardziej wolałam psy niż koty, ale w tym przypadku jest inaczej!

I have always prefered dogs to cats but in this case it's different!

Wiem z doświadczenia, że uczniowie w każdym wieku popełniają te same dwa podstawowe błędy, kiedy zaczynają używać Present Continuous - albo nie dodają końcówki -ing, albo zapominają o odmienionym czasowniku 'to be'. Rozwiązaniem, które stosuję już od wielu lat jest kot:

I know from experience that students of all ages make the same two basic mistakes when they start using the Present Continuous Tense - they forget either about the -ing or abot the verb 'to be' in the proper form. The solution that I have used for many years is the cat:

Mamy kota. Tylko co z nim zrobić? Już mówię: 

1. Na tablicy piszemy przykładowe zdanie w czasie Present Continuous. Zachowujemy stosowne odstępy.

2. Tłumaczymy uczniom, że poprawne zdanie powinno składać się z podmiotu, odmienionego czasownika 'to be' oraz czasownika podstawowego z końcówką -ing (czyli trochę im przynudzamy, aby kolejny podpunkt wzbudził lepsze ożywienie ☺).

3. Na tablicy wokół przykładowego zdania rysujemy kota.

4. Tłumaczymy uczniom, że każdy wspomniany wcześniej element zdania to odpowiednio głowa, szyja, tułów i ogon kota. Od tej pory każde ich zdanie w Present Continuous to kot. Aby zdanie było poprawne, kot musi mieć wszystkie części ciała. 

We have a cat. But what to do with it? Let me explain:

1. We write a sample sentence in the Present Continuous Tense on the blackboard. Remember about the proper spaces between the words. 

2. We explain to our students that a correct sentence should contain a subject, the verb 'to be' in the correct form and the main verb with the -ing ending (we bore them a little to achieve a more cheerful result at the next stage ☺). 

3. We draw a cat around our sample sentence. 

4. We explain to our students that the aformentioned parts of the sentence correspond to the cat's body parts: a head, a neck, a main body and a tail. From now on, their every sentence in the Present Continuous is a cat. If they want to make a correct sentence, their cat needs to have all the body parts in place. 

Następnie uczniowie mogą sami narysować kota w zeszytach lub możemy im wydrukować obrazek do uzupełnienia:
