Present Continuous Party at U3A/Impreza "Present Continuous" na Uniwersytecie Trzeciego Wieku

My "Pensioners" are really energetic ladies who don't like to be bored on retirement. That's why I decided to organize a party for them to celebrate a revision of the Present Continuous Tense. It was great! ;-)

Wszystko czego potrzebowałam do wyprawienia tej imprezki to tablica, marker i małe kawałki papieru z wypisanymi czynnościami. Cała reszta pozostawiona została naszej wyobraźni i moim niezbyt zaawansowanym zdolnościom do rysowania.

All I needed for this party was a whiteboard, a marker and small pieces of paper with activities written on them. The rest was left to our imagination and my not-really-advanced drawing skills.

And here is what to do step by step in order to have fun at the Present Continuous party:

1. Nadanie kontekstu.
;-] ) i zapisuję na tablicy w lewym górnym rogu pytanie "What are you doing?". W lewym dolnym rogu zostawiam sobie miejsce do pisania zdań, żeby nie ścierać powstającego obrazka.

1. Contextualize the situation.
I explain to my students that in a moment we are going to throw a party in a restaurant. In the meantime, I draw an outline of a room for the venue on the whiteboard. I explain that the drawing on the board is going to be a screenshot of their party in which everyone is going to be caught doing some activity. I check if my students can ask a question about an acivity happening at the moment of speaking (of course they can! :-] ) and I write in the top-left corner the question: "What are you doing?". In the bottom-left corner I leave a box for writing senstences to avoid wiping off the drawing.

2. Rozpoczęcie właściwej zabawy.

Schemat wygląda mniej więcej tak:

- Uczeń A do Ucznia B: What are you doing?
- Uczeń B losuje karteczkę i odpowiada np.: I'm ordering drinks at the bar.
- Nauczyciel do ucznia C: What is Uczeń B doing?
- Uczeń C: Uczeń B is ordering drinks at the bar.

Nanoszę czynność na obrazek, numeruję i zapisuję zdanie. Uczniowie w zeszytach tworzą swój rysunek i zapisują zdania.
Powtarzamy powyższy schemat tyle razy ilu mamy uczniów.

2. The game begins.
The pattern is more or less like this:

- Student A to Student B: What are you doing?
- Student B picks one piece of paper and replies e.g.: I'm ordering drinks at the bar.
- The Teacher to Student C: What is Student B doing?
- Student C: Student B is ordering drinks at the bar.

I draw a given student on the board, I number his "action" and write the sentence. The students create their own drawings in their notebooks and write sentences.
We continue with the pattern until all the students have played Student B's role.

At the end,  if you have some time left, you can ask the students to close their notebooks and you can ask them to tell who is doing what in the picture. In this way we check if the students remember the vocabulary and if they can easily create sentences in Present Continuous.

As far as the theme is concerned, I chose the party in a restaurant for this group because every year my U3A students and I go out for a cup of coffee and some cake to celebrate the end of school year. This is why the context for the party was familiar and it was easy for them to "feel" the situation. But other ideas for using this activity also come to my mind:

2. Zajęcia z dziećmi i młodzieżą:
  • Sytuacja 4: Dyskoteka szkolna.
  • Sytuacja 5: Szkolny występ/teatrzyk. Kto co robi, a kto się leni?

1. Classes with adults at their workplace.
  • Situation 1: What do employees do when the boss is not in the office?
  • Situation 2: Integration party in the open air or Christmas party.
  • Situation 3: Working together on the project. Who does what and who is the lazy one?

2. Activities with children and teenagers:

  • Situation 1: Free time on a school trip.
  • Situation 2: What would happen in the classroom if the teacher left for a moment.
  • Situation 3: A class trip to a camping site.
  • Situation 4: School disco.
  • Situation 5: School performance / theatre. Who does what and who is the lazy one?

The activities and the drawing should be fun so that the students can easily get into the presented situation, make jokes and comments. The activities can be also invented by the students. If you have an artistically talented student in the group, you can ask him/her to make the drawing on the board. You can ask additional questions and enlighten the dialogues in certain ways, but I guess that I don't need to tell you that because you ale have this "sparkle" in you and reviving the lesson with your way of being is a standard in your classroom :)

Let me know if you use this idea in your classroom. I will willingly find out how it went or what can be improved. :)

Miłego weekendu! Trzymajcie się!
Have a nice weekend! Take care!
